Air-Gap Faucets have 2 additional tubing connections (typically red and black), which route waste water through the air gap portion of the faucet. This air gap creates a physical break in the tubing, preventing contaminated sink drain water from flowing in reverse back into the filter system. Non-air gap faucets lack these extra connections and only feature a single filtered water supply tube to the faucet, offering no such protection against backflow contamination.
